Simply updating the model with more recent training data or a price reduction does not count as an upgrade. A speed upgrade does not count either since it is highly variable and they seem to be gradually improving it without notice.
The upgrade must be publicity accessible through their API without requiring an access request or waiting list.
An upgrade may be a more capable or "smarter" model, a model with more input + output tokens, or extra features such as the function calling upgrade, native access to external knowledge, or multimodality.
