I made a game of Regex Golf for Magic: The Gathering card names. Will anyone find a set of cards that can be golfed in 1/3 that many characters?

For example, if there are 9 cards in each list, that's 18 cards total, so you'd need to golf it in 6 or fewer characters.

Resolves to NO if I'm unaware of anyone having done so by close.

I suppose could say I scored a whole in o?

Do people find these kinds of markets fun? Should I make more?

@IsaacKing I mean, I enjoyed my mana from both of these. 🤑

I’ve spent my fair share of time playing: https://alf.nu/RegexGolf?world=regex&level=r00

@IsaacKing I did. I played the game “seriously” for the first 10 mins or so, and then realized the low-frequency vowel strategy and pivoted to spinning small sets quickly.

@MattCWilson Six is a sweet spot b/c you get two letters. Nine isn’t even so you have to hit ten before you have three chars to work with and even then you’re basically stuck with a|b as the most efficient construct. The game gets severely more challenging at twelve and up.

Hmm, maybe I should have used a minimum.

@MattCWilson In my defense, I took out Richard Garfield himself. That’s gotta be worth something.

@MattCWilson But also - the game doesn’t seem to recognize constructs like [^xy]+ - is that expected?

@MattCWilson It seems to work for me when I try it. What specifically do you think it should be doing that it isn't?

predicted YES

@IsaacKing Ah, figured it out - it’s not doing greedy matching by default.
