I think experimentation necessitates curiosity. To experiment one must do something more than one way, and to do that they must speculate other ways it can be done. Novel experimentation goes a step further, requiring that something new must also be tested. I don't think it's intelligent to both test something with known results and to only test it a single way. Curiosity, or the desire to learn something new (at least to the mind in question) is absolutely necessary before you can truly be said to experiment.
