The range of cougars is huge, stretching from Argentina to Canada, and is expanding. A tremendous amount would need to go wrong for them to go extinct - they inhabit mountains, deserts, jungles, swamps, etc. If all of these biomes become uninhabitable to such an adaptable species (and they can't expand into newly-inhabitable range), the IUCN is probably extinct too...
