Bet UP if you think it will die. 100% means it definitely will die first, 0% means you think it is safe.

Whenever a place goes out of business I will set the price to 100%; this happens as soon as it's out of business and the doors are permanently closed.

I will do this for each of the first 5 places to die.

Once 5 have died, the remainders resolve to 0%.

"Die" means the place has moved significantly (not easy walking distance), is out of business, is closed & boarded up, or has changed name and style significantly.

No end date, will keep open til at least 5 are dead.

I will update status as time goes by.

Wow, nothing ever changes... Is the idea that in 50 years downtown will still be about the same?

The one downtown, not the one in the library

Opening another shop next door, curry pizza or something like that. Sign of thriving? Or desperate attempt to save off bankrupt

@Ernie theyre multiplying

@lag hahaha

Went by today, still doing fine although closed Tuesdays

the entire market is priced way to high, totals up to abour 915 percent when it should be around 500% total

@lag yes. We haven't found enough people in San Mateo to take some risks.

Most of these places seem to be thriving, though. So it may take a while.

?

My reviews:

  • oneills - scummy local irish

  • philz - chain

  • curry - chain, weird management, not ever really busy

  • mortal & pestle - semi busy, addon to curry up now

  • daeho - new, never been

  • himawari - classic eternal local ramen place

  • izakaya mai - classic izakaya style

  • ny pizza - love it, hole in the wall joint in nj style

  • pacific catch - chain

  • takahashi market - local japanese hawaiian rough supermarket

  • saigon city - chinese run vietnamese place

  • yoshimizu - new, never been

  • pancho villa - beloved always super packed mexican

  • 3 bees local, rarely busy, weird coffee place which people still like

  • gyukaku - chainy, busy, fried meat

  • mcgoverns - local dive bar, cops go sometimes, otherwise mostly locals, lots of pinball machines, always super dark and non-busy

  • pausa - fancy local "social climber" type of place

  • pokeatery - new (4 years old?) pokey place

  • tomatina - local china, 1 of 3 or so locations, nicely done, nearly never busy, huge

  • b street books - eternally nearly out of business, weird hours, labor of love, great books

@Ernie some of them might be fronts for money laundering, so it's hard to go by just how well they seem to be doing. At least this is my guess for how so many stores on Valencia St with zero customers seem to manage to pay the high rent and continue to defy death.

@KirubakaranAthmanathan yes, interesting

google maps showed me places I tend to go a lot. I've been to most of them at least 5 times, and to some 50+ times. I don't know if that's a new feature or if it was always that way. But at least at one point, each of those places offered something that I liked.
