What is the minimum amount of yearly compensation (from a job) that you would require in order to "move to California"?

This is a hypothetical....some basic ground rules:

The compensation is from "a job" -- defined extremely broadly to fit whatever you actually think is a job that you would do, but for whatever reason it requires you to physically reside in California.

So you will be:

  • moving to California

  • specifically for a job

  • and some amount of your time in California will be spent working that job

Think about this situation for a while, compare to your existing situation in life, and choose the MINIMUM compensation that would convince you to move to California to accept the job.

I was divinely inspired to create a Nebraska version of this poll

@SaviorofPlant Do I have a problem if my answer for Nebraska is very obviously going to be lower than my answer for California?

This is assuming that I somehow magically and painlessly get whatever work visa is required. If I have to try and possibly fail to get a visa, the number at least doubles.

Feel like this could be way more fine-grained at the lower end 😆

Giant gap between 100 and 200k haha

@bens Don't worry -- if you would not do it for $100k and would do it for $200k, you just pick the higher one.

$200,000 because it's a high cost of living state (generally) and I highly value living close to my family (and by extension, not needing to do something like fly to see them).

If it were another state also greatly far from my family but also cheaper to live, I might say $100,000

is it a high cost of living part of California?

@Jack1 You're the one coming up with the scenario beyond that, not me! Dream up whatever seems reasonable.

For myself I can't pick yet but I don't really want to be in California so I would be picking a pretty high option as a result. That makes it harder to answer I think, compared to someone who did want to go there.

@Eliza what’s wrong with California

@Jack1 I just don't want to live there. I know a lot of other people do like that idea.

Also, I intended to include a special answer about "The amount is higher than I think I could actually be paid for what I am capable of doing", but the last time I did a multi-select poll people got confused. So you could just write about that in the comments.

Btw if you don't want to DOXX yourself you can choose NOT to pick "Already there" and actually just like imagine it anyway. Or pick "See Results". Sorry for any confusion.
