Resolution criteria
This market resolves YES if Waymo's robotaxi service becomes available for public use at or within Rio Rancho City Hall (3200 Civic Center Circle NE, Rio Rancho, NM 87144) by December 31, 2028. Resolution requires that users can request and complete a Waymo ride originating from or terminating at this location through the Waymo One app or other ride sharing app app. The market resolves NO if this does not occur by the deadline.
Background
Waymo currently operates commercial robotaxi services in Phoenix, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Austin. In 2026, Waymo plans to expand to Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, San Antonio, San Diego, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Rio Rancho is located in Sandoval County, New Mexico, approximately 20 miles north of Albuquerque. Waymo previously tested autonomous trucks in New Mexico as part of its commercial trucking division, though this was limited to the southern part of the state.
Considerations
Rio Rancho is not among Waymo's announced 2026 expansion cities. New Mexico has not been a focus for Waymo's robotaxi operations, which have concentrated on major metropolitan areas in California, Arizona, Texas, and the Southeast. Expansion to Rio Rancho would represent a significant geographic shift toward smaller markets outside Waymo's current strategic focus areas.
