Not take it tomorrow after all

I have my behind-the-wheel test scheduled tomorrow! I’ve been practicing driving with my parents for months, and I just did my third lesson with a driving instructor, who explained to me how the test works. (We also practiced driving in the location of the test, Redwood City.)

Basically, it begins with the pre-drive checklist, where I have to identify a bunch of buttons on the car. Then there’s about 10 minutes of driving. It’s possible to fail by getting 3 wrong on the pre-drive checklist, or making 15 smaller mistakes, but I think the easiest way is to make a Critical Driving Error, which is an automatic fail.

These include if the examiner has to intervene, if I hit an object or curb, if I violate a traffic sign, if I disobey safety vehicles, if I do something deemed dangerous, if I go 10 mph above or below the speed limit (without a reason), if I fail at one of the bold things on the pre-drive checklist, or if I use the wrong lane.

I feel pretty good about all these things. During my driving lesson, the instructor’s main feedback was that I sometimes went too slow, wasn’t reversing straight back, and occasionally stopped in the crosswalk instead of behind the line. I think if I focus on everything, I can succeed.

General policy for my markets: In the rare event of a conflict between my resolution criteria and the agreed-upon common-sense spirit of the market, I may resolve it according to the market's spirit or N/A, probably after discussion.

13 mistakes, my god. Not what I expected. Some of this can be attributed to the fact that I did not get along with the driving instructor, who had a thick accent and was annoyed any time I asked for clarification on the directions. So for example, the last turn being too wide was because she didn’t give me advance notice. Deceleration/braking issues with stop signs might be real - it was also raining for much of the test - and wasn’t on my radar, which is worrying. But it might also be a judgement call made by an examiner who disliked me. At least I passed…

@Conflux hell yea congrats! i failed mine twice thanks to stupid things like "a bicyclist speeding illegally across the street from the sidewalk" lol

I failed my first driving test. I approached a stop sign. I said to myself (aloud!), "now, there's a stop sign, got to stop, got to make sure I stop". I reach it and am so relieved that the normally busy road has no traffic that I roll through without stopping. The assessor looks at me in disbelief. "I just went through the stop sign, didn't I?" / "yes, you did."

So yeah, I probably have a higher prior on silly mistakes than most. Best of luck!

@Mad Sorry to hear! Good luck on the next try.

Just checking: was the total number of mistakes greater than 5, despite the test halting for a critical error?

It was more than 15 years ago now so I don't remember 😂. I passed on my third try (second I failed to reverse parallel park so racked up too many errors from that).
