Will we move Taco Tuesday chat to Discord?

We currently have a 145-person Facebook Messenger group being used for Taco Tuesday (TT), mostly people in SF. It's where I post weekly notifications that it's happening.

Right now, people keep posting off-topic stuff there. There's a Taco Tuesday Lounge messenger chat in principle, in practice it's not used that much. So I'm thinking about another Discord server.

Pros:

  • Better organization. A 100+ person messenger chat is pretty unwieldy

    • Discord can have different channels for on-topic vs off-topic vs other conversations

  • Taco Tuesday kind of has its own community now, and a Discord server would help facilitate more community conversations

  • Some people don't use Messenger

Cons:

  • Some people don't use Discord

  • People may not want another place to check messages

    • It's simple to have the Messenger chat just be "your weekly notification that TT is happening"

  • I'm not super excited to moderate yet another Discord server (but TT would probably be low-stress)

Resolves to YES if I've decided to set up a Discord server for TT by market close; NO otherwise.

buying every time people post random stuff in the messenger group 😹

Some other benefits of a Discord server:

  • It's easier to invite ppl, and for people to leave and rejoin the server whenever they feel like it

  • You could add channels for spinoff events in other cities like NYC and Boston

whoops

In particular, it's possible that people don't actually mind constant random posting in a giant group Messenger chat, in which case maybe I'll just moderate the chat less

@Austin I think the people who do mind the giant group Messenger chat just leave the chat. Imo, moderate less and have both messenger and discord groups. You only have to update each of them with time/location of taco tuesday, which is a quick copy paste.

This is kind of what I'm worried about -- people leaving the chat and then not attending Taco Tuesday anymore, whereas they might have if TT chat were less noisy? In my head, the group messenger chat is solely for announcing the weekly event (basically a once-a-week mailing list) and not for random convos; but other people want to use it differently.

@Austin definitely true. I like the idea of both since people have options. People kinda just go off topic in group chats, so as long as the discord link is readily available in the messenger group, others have a place to check important taco tuesday info without all the spam.

@Austin liking things doesn't seem to work 😿 (both mobile and desktop)

@vlad hm yeah, I've reported this bug on Discord
