@MarcusAbramovitch intro'd me to Jay Shooster, and we're chatting for 30m on Thursday. He's trying to convince me to donate to his campaign, will he succeed?
I generally like EA candidates but don't know much about Jay; apparently he's
A long time member of the EA community. He's a lawyer who does some work for Open Phil, an AI policy fellow and a lawyer who files lawsuits against cruel factory farming companies.
Seems pretty based.
I did donate to Carrick Flynn's ill-fated campaign and was on the edge of volunteering for that too; though the impact of having a Florida state rep seems much lower than a US congress rep, probably the chances of success are much higher.

I have donated $1k and @rachel has donated $1k. Since we share finances, I'm resolving this market to YES.
Good luck, Jay!
Jay, from my experience is just an all around stand up guy. Involved in EA for almost a decade at this point and has comported himself with high moral character and most certainly "walks the walk". I'm not an American but I'd be a Ron Paul type Republican and I would still be donating to Jay.
.
@MarcusAbramovitch 😂 I’m not naming on manifold existing for another week never mind setting things up.
@MarcusAbramovitch Campaigns aren't 501c3 so it can't happen under the current donation system. (Nothing stopping Manifold from doing donations a different way, but it wouldn't work in the current system.)
.
@MarcusAbramovitch Manifold the for-profit company can donate to campaigns however they please. Manifold for Good, the 501c3 entity that handles all of Manifold's donations currently, cannot.
That's why I said: Nothing stopping Manifold from doing donations a different way, but it wouldn't work in the current system.
@jack I asked Jay about this in the call, it seems like there are strict requirements around reporting who sent money to campaigns (like it has to originate from the donor or sth, I can't give $100 to Bob to give to Jay). So very unlikely we can set up a "mana for political donations" program -- would have been fun though!
