Starting with the Plus Series NAS units launched in April 2025, Synology has removed compatibility with third-party hard drive brands in order to force users to buy their own branded storage drives which they sell at a significant markup.
Synology has suggested that they may add some third-party models to the compatibility list in the future, but now almost half a year later there are still zero third-party models listed. Even the most popular drives for consumer NAS devices, such as the Seagate IronWolf or WD Red series are not deemed "compatible".
There has been a lot of backlash in the tech community about this, and many users have stopped recommending Synology for new purchases as a result.
Will Synology respond to the backlash by reversing their decision before the end of 2026 or will they stay the course?
The compatibility list for the DS925+ model is here: https://www.synology.com/en-ca/compatibility?search_by=drives&model=DS925%2B&category=hdds_no_ssd_trim
If both Seagate IronWolf and WD Red models are added to this compatibility list, I will count that as a reversal of the policy against third party drives (YES).
I will not trade on this market.
