Resolution Criteria:
"Supported by advertising" means that the company allows advertisers to pay to have their content preferentially shown to users. If there exists a single state-of-the-art, popular AI system that is funded by advertising, then I will count this as yes. The existence of small non-ad-supported AI systems wouldn't result in a "no" immediately, in the same way that there are some small search engines that you can pay to use today, but basically no one uses them. The system doesn't have to beonlydependent on ads, it only has to be partially supported by ads.
Motivation and Context:
Google search in 2024 is funded by advertising. Every time you search for something, a few of the top results are people who paid to be there. But today, most top LLMs are pay-to-play: you give them $20/month and they'll give you an ad-free service. Will future top AI systems be ad funded?
