The Vikram lunar lander from the Chandrarayaan-3 mission was equipped with a seismic instrument package (ILSA).

On August 26, 2023, the ILSA recorded a “seemingly natural” seismic event, but the source of the event was reported to be “under investigation,” and no updates seem to have followed.

Moonquakes, similar to earthquakes, have been known to exist since seismometers were left on the Moon by various Apollo missions, but these have been off since the late ‘70’s. If determined to be a moonquake, the Chandra-3 event would be the first moonquake observed almost 50 years.
