at market creation, there is a poll running for the Best Meme of February in @strutheo's inaugural monthly market and one of mine is a contender. I've heard a variety of opinions on this meme but a particularly interesting one came up this morning:
here's the meme in question:
I won't get into what I think of the suggestion that my sense of humour is a Thirst Trap and tbf, finding me funny is obviously an attractive quality in a person. but: is Mike Novak right? will I become romantically involved with someone who voted for my meme?
I am not currently romantically involved (by any definition) with anyone on Manifold and in case it wasn't obvious: my comment on the poll as a result of this exchange ("vote for me and win a date") was a joke.
resolves by the end of 2024.
eta: I've voted for my own meme and I don't count for the purposes of this market.
@shankypanky it was hurting my calibration. you of all people should know that i’m a notorious flipper. i’ll hold YES again before this resolves
I actually thought it was the best meme. I was making jest of the skewed gender demo on Manifold. That's all. 🕊
More importantly, I was going to reply with a meme-ish YouTube link and accidentally stumbled upon the creepiest music video that's possibly ever been made.
This needs to get out there, and thank you, @shankypanky, for exposing Dean Martin's creepy AF behaviour.
That's what makes manifold great. I stumbled upon a comment deep down on some random market and it ends up with a 🐀 pack scandal!
You got best meme in the 🎒 for ☘️ !
@dgga as far as an online community is concerned, I suppose there's also a non-zero chance that I'm not actually even a real live girl
Even if we assume @shankypanky will actively attempt to become romantically involved with the poll voters, only a tiny slither of randomly selected Manifold users will be geographically close enough, the right age, the right orientation, attractive, fun to hang out with etc, plus she has a high question resolution honesty rating, so I suspect the correct probability is <1% rather than the current 19%
@TheAllMemeingEye all good and reasonable points. ftr: I don't plan to bet or actively attempt to influence the outcome in either direction (a long distance romance would count though). I also think everyone is overlooking the crucial point that it's not only my decision - voters would also have to be mutually interested in me?
this market could have potentially been funnier if @strutheo didn't close the poll as soon as he saw it 😂
@TheAllMemeingEye Why the assumption that geographic proximity is a prerequisite for a romantic relationship?
@ssh I suppose it's not an absolute requirement, but in general I don't think it's an unreasonable assumption that, for most people, being able to physically meet up with a potential partner is a plus, though obviously like some of the other factors I mentioned it can be looked past if the other factors make up for it
@shankypanky lol in the absence of major red flags on your part I don't know about, or you having a rare orientation, my guess is that roughly 50% of the people you are interested in would also be interested in you, largely due to correlated niche interests etc
@TheAllMemeingEye my initial instinct was to make a market about my red flags but I'll skip that one
@shankypanky I give 30% odds a meme with some variant of this as the punchline would be the winning meme of this month if submitted lmao
@shankypanky also in case I misread and you're not joking about wanting therapy, I hope you can get the help that enables you to overcome any difficulties you might be facing, stay safe fam 🙏
@mattyb oh no I didn't account for a romantic entanglement with myself. I should update the criteria.
