The course 18.702 (Algebra II) was offered at MIT during the Spring 2026 semester. It was graded as follows:

Students are evaluated based on the following.

  • A. Homework, split evenly over 9 problem sets

  • B. Quizzes (split evenly over 6 quizzes, each 15 minutes for 3 problems)

  • C. Midterm exam (80 minutes)

  • D. Final exam (180 minutes)

Then a student's percentage grade is determined as follows:

  • Any percentage score on a problem set or quiz which is less than (midterm + 2*final)/3 will be raised to this percentage.

  • In each category, a percentage grade is computed.

  • The four categories are weighted in the ratio 4:2:3:6.

After grading for the final exam has concluded, the professor will provide cutoff scores, which are the minimum percentage grade required for each letter grade. This market resolves YES iff the minimum percentage grade required for an A- is at least 80%.

what is this grading system

@jatloe The point is to give students the leeway to make mistakes while they are still learning the material, while giving a partial safety net for those who are not good with exams.
