Is a Hotdog a Sandwich? A Definitive Study. - Existential Comics

My take:
Descriptive linguistics (words mean what people say they mean) is better for describing a language as it is, but prescriptive linguistics (words mean these specific things derived from logical rules) if done well can be used to describe what language should aspire to be. In the case of this question, descriptive linguistics is likely more applicable, but to me, unlike the characters in the comic, I absolutely would instinctively interpret a request for a sandwich as referring to the lone hotdog on the table, and I think most english speakers would as well, so the descriptive and prescriptive cases actually line up.
