Advice for job search?
Jun 10, 2025

The last time I worked was before the pandemic, during which I developed posturally hyperextended and (in 2022) bicameral schizophrenia. I have since been on Social Security disability, due to the extreme effect hyperextended schizophrenia had on me. I have now decided to go back into the labor force due to my currently limited options in life. I am on clozapine, which is a sedative that makes me less extraverted and I suspect reduces my conscientiousness.

I have an IQ of roughly 125 and a bachelor's degree in economics and reside in a major metropolitan area. I know a bit of JavaScript/Python. I had very little success in finding a job after college by posting online applications, but I did work a bit part time. I would like to find full time work by the end of the year.

I will give bounties of up to 150 mana for each piece of good advice.

You are free to ask questions, though I may not answer all of them.

Biggest way is just by knowing somebody, even if barely. I reached out to extended family members that I knew had decent jobs and ended up with a few decent positions over the years just from their vouch. They barely know me, but I’m family, so they were willing to do it. I’m talking like second cousins I hadn’t seen in 5 years but Grandma had their phone number.

Some poster here (who prefers to remain anonymous) suggested me this book; I don't know if I should buy it: https://www.amazon.com/2-Hour-Job-Search-Second-Technology-ebook/dp/B07VJZFK4C

@EnopoletusHarding i find it rare that books have any helpful advice on this subject, unless you're new to interviewing in general?

@EnopoletusHarding try to get a preview first. Lots of books on this subject are just repositories of general advice.

@strutheo Hm; OK, I will give you 11 mana.

@EnopoletusHarding He (presumably) also recommended a "For Dummies" book, but it was from 1999 and rather expensive. :-/

@EnopoletusHarding ask chatgpt for a summary of it maybe it will be good enough

What sorts of jobs are you looking for ? Any other experience on your resume that is relevant ?

@strutheo That's what I don't know, chris. I have a few fairly elaborate JavaScript projects from a few years back, but I don't think they count for much. I don't think I have much relevant experience in anything but some part time work.

@EnopoletusHarding particularly, do you want a job on economics-related stuff since that is where you did bachelors? Or would you prefer it being somewhere else?

@100Anonymous If possible, I prefer it be related to my degree.

i dont know much about economics jobs sadly, maybe find some people who work in jobs you're interested in and ask them what job board they used

@100Anonymous This is not helpful advice.

Linkedin and indeed are total wastes of time, all ghost jobs. Wellfound might have some better listings and more responsive companies. Also word of mouth is best of course

@strutheo I will give you 15 mana.

@strutheo I disagree that LinkedIn are all ghost jobs. But yes they are often not updated or deleted in real time

@PaperBoyrPaperBoyPaperBoyrPaperBoPaperBoyrPaperBoyPaperBoyrPaperBo (there's a weird comment bug that prevents me from deleting the above)

@EnopoletusHarding - LinkedIn definitely has real jobs, but you have to follow people or be connected to them to see them. Connect with people at companies you know, like previous colleagues and people they know, or mutual acquaintances from other platforms like this one. Check your feed occasionally for posts like "So-and-so is hiring for an amazing role at ..."
