In the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series of books by George R. R. Martin, the Lord Commander at the start of the series, Jeor Mormont, is the 996th Lord Commander, followed by Jon Snow as the 997th. This number's proximity to 1000 has led to fans speculating as to who the 1000th Lord Commander will be, and various theories have been put forward:

If there are multiple claimants to the title, then this will be based on who is generally acknowledged as the 1000th; I may resolve the market to PROB if necessary.

I will not resolve the market on the basis of rumours, leaks, or ambiguous comments by Martin. If it seems likely that the remaining books will never come out (even posthumously), then an announcement as to who the 1000th Lord Commander would have been (e.g. based on Martin's notes) is sufficient to resolve this. If even that does not happen, this market will resolve N/A.

  • Update 2025-03-09 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): Multiple Terms Clarification

    • Jon Snow will be counted as having two separate terms only if there is a separate Commander elected in between his terms, with that intervening term considered the 999th Lord Commander.

    • In cases where Jon's term is continuous without an intervening commander, his service will not be counted as multiple separate terms.

I might be mistaken but they never got to 1000th in the show, right? Like it was Jon, then his right hand man, then possibly Jon again right at the end. Are we counting multiple terms of Jon as separate commanders? Does that include his death and resurrection as separate consecutive terms?

@TheAllMemeingEye Yes I Think that’s correct about the show: https://gameofthrones.fandom.com/wiki/Lord_Commander_of_the_Night%27s_Watch

I’ll count Jon as having two separate terms if there’s a Commander elected in between (as the 999th).

@lisamarsh Thanks 👍
