Where should I work next? (0.25% of comp bounty)
No bounty left

I'm looking for a job. If you have suggestions for places to apply, please post a comment (one comment per organization, multiple roles in one comment is fine) and include any information you think is helpful. More general advice on finding/getting my next job is also appreciated. I reserve the right to not pay out bounties if it looks like you're just spamming random big companies or whatever.

Bounties:

  • M$75 for every suggested org I hadn't considered yet and ~seems worth considering

  • M$400 if I end up "seriously considering" your suggestion. This is kind of vague, but for example if I set up a meeting with anyone at the company that would probably count, and if I apply it definitely counts.

  • M$1500 if I apply and get an offer (regardless of whether I accept).

  • 0.25% of my yearly compensation if I get hired. If it's a temporary contract or some other case where I feel this doesn't make sense, I will try to figure out something reasonable. I'll pay this out once, not for every year I work there.

I might also award discretionary bounties for helpful advice.

About me:

  • I currently live (and have citizenship) in the Netherlands, but I'm very much open to moving.

    • "very much open": I think more likely than not I will work in a different country 3 years from now.

      • SWE salaries in the Netherlands are relatively low.

      • Most companies are not in the Netherlands.

    • If I do move, I would prefer to live in a country where people mostly speak English.

  • I was an SRE at Google Ireland (joined September last year). Unfortunately I was also one of the people they laid off this year. This was my first "real job".

    • I passed the SWE interviews and ended up taking a SWE-SRE role.

  • I have a BSc. in Mathematics from Leiden University.

  • I'd prefer not to work fully remote.

  • I'm interested in Effective Altruism.

    • I'm a GWWC member donating 10+%. If an organization has a generous donation matching program I will probably include it in total comp (to the extent I actually use it).

    • My donations have gone mostly to global poverty and animal welfare stuff, but I'm interested in more longtermist stuff as well.

    • I'd strongly prefer to work somewhere I feel I am having a significant positive impact directly, not just through donating a part of my income.

      • I think I'd enjoy working on stuff related to AI safety, but I doubt any of the big orgs would hire me.

  • I'm kind of an anxious persen and dread interviewing for a job and not getting an offer. Noting this both as a warning (I might not end up applying to a lot of palces) and as a scream for help.

    • If you make a suggestion and also offer to bet that I would get an offer if I applied, I might be more likely to actually apply? Not sure.

I'll add more stuff as I think of it or people ask about it. Feel free to DM me on Discord as well (@jskf_ :{).

Any company in green aviation? You could consider eVTOL manufacturers (such as Veetical Aerospace in 🇬🇧) or battery / power train manufacturers, such as Magnix. There is also pipistrel, now part of Textron, in Eastern Europe. EA reasoning: Aviation is beneficial for humanity but currently bad for the environment, green aviation will help. All aviation manufacturers need SWEs, but software development in aviation is different from sd for big tech / software / internet COs

AltX, we're specifically looking for software engineers right now. We are based in Panama but can be remote for a bit. Feel free to DM me

If you’re interested in EA and looking to earn to give, why not optimise for pay? Companies like Optiver have places in the Netherlands and have huge pay packages. There’s also Jane St and Susquehanna for similar positions. These places want software engineers and have to remain competitive with each other so it’s possible you’ll find yourself doing some interesting research.

The interview process for Optiver starts with some tests where if you get through that you get some pretty interesting interviews (it’s much more working in a question together rather than interrogation). These firms interview differently to what you’re used to and could be interesting in trying something different. You might not get in but you’ll at least have some fun.
