November has traditionally been National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). Although the nonprofit that originally promoted the concept shut down, the community is still alive.

I have never taken part in NaNoWriMo or anything similar before. I want to take part this year to write a memoir. I will provide updates on my progress throughout.

Resolves to the total number of words I write for this project between 19th October and 4am on the 1st of December, my timezone (UTC+0).

I will not bet on this market. I will not add more options to this market unless there's a very compelling reason (I will never split out the 60k+ option into more bins). This is my first market so feel free to make suggestions for improvement!

Word target

I have not set myself a specific word target yet. The plan is to see how writing goes for a few days then set a formal target.

The traditional target is 50k words, or 1667 words/day, but I've noticed from early trials that this is causing me to pad out my writing / write fluff to increase my word count. I want to set a target that will be challenging but also make me feel good about the quantity/quality balance I'm striking.

Total words as of 2nd November: 3132

Log:

(Includes some writing I did in October as a test run / prep for this project)

19th October: ~850 words

30th October: ~100 words

1st November: 410 words

2nd November: 1770 words

Update: 0 words on the 3rd and 4th of November. Weekdays are tough! Something I already knew but somehow hoped I could get around. I may get a few words in today.

Update: 1770 words today. It was exhausting. I spent several hours in cafes and produced maybe 700 words. Then I got home, made some dinner, felt super tired and slumped onto my bed, thought "welp surely this is for today", and in that moment my brain thought "wouldn't it be fun to get inspired again at the most inconvenient time possible?" so I spent the last 80 minutes pumping out another 1000 words.

Update: I wrote 410 words yesterday. I was going to write more in the evening but then my friend suggested that we watch a film and I said yes. This is going great so far 😂

I have more free time today so I will try to make up for yesterday. Had a good writing session in a cafe but I must now stop to go do something else for a few hours.

This is so nerve-racking! I've never subjected a personal project to public scrutiny like this. It's a tingly feeling watching the numbers move and strangers make judgements on me :)
