Mad that York is trading so low. It's lower than London. Easily the second nicest city on the list.

@Mochi went there this January. Ghent was cool but we left Bruges after less than three hours because there were just way too many tourists for a place that size

Do you like cities that are famous and have tourist attractions or ones off the beaten path more?

@JimAusman the latter is preferred. Too many tourist traps in big cities

@Mochi all the second cities in France are fantastic then: Bordeaux, Lyons, Nice, and even Marseille. The language barrier could be a problem. Do you get lonely when you travel alone and can’t speak the language?

@Mochi I will make a pitch for some smaller cities in Scotland. My daughter goes to the University of Edinburgh so I will claim some expertise. Edinburgh is fantastic but too overrun with tourists. The Fringe Festival is amazing and I am going this year but I don’t think that’s what you are looking for.

My daughter likes Glasgow. It’s working class and hip and inexpensive. I personally really was charmed by Dunfermline. I stayed there once because I was too cheap to stay in Edinburgh. It’s the old 1300s capital of Scotland and has this enormous ruin of a monastery that was sacked during the reformation. They have rebuilt part of it and use it for the Presbyterian Church and it also has a visitors center. Robert the Bruce of Braveheart is buried there and so is Saint Margaret (a famous Scottish queen). The cemetery looks like something in a D&D game that should be haunted. Maybe it is ;)

It’s a short train ride from Edinburgh so if you go there don’t miss it. It’s worth a day trip for sure but I would spend the night as the town is magical at night. Super cheap lodging too. I stayed at The City Hotel which has perfectly serviceable rooms for $100/night. Don’t let them put you above the bar.

If you are there on Sunday morning go to church even if you don’t believe. It’s a great cultural experience.

@JimAusman oh man thanks for the super detailed reply. I have to say, you’ve definitely enchanted me with the detailed pitch for Dunfermline. It sounds exactly like the kind of place I’d love to wander around and I’m genuinely tempted to make the trip now. Unfortunately my schedule in Scotland is already really tight this time, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to squeeze it in. But if I can find a way to make the timing work, you’ve absolutely convinced me it’s worth visiting — and if not, it’s definitely going on my list for the next trip!

@Mochi Consider visiting some other nearby cities in the Netherlands instead of just Amsterdam, like Utrecht or Haarlem.

@Mochi are you going to Edinburgh? I am there from 21-29 and we could have a drink or something. I will be with college friend and it will be crazy with Fringe but we can make it work, especially 21-23 when I will be alone.

Bicycle of course, if you are into that, when you visit the Netherlands. It’s a completely different experience than cycling here.
