Ski season is almost upon here!

Mt. Baker ski area in northern Washington State is known for getting some of the largest annual snow totals, with ski area is home to the world's greatest recorded snowfall in one season, 1140 inches in the 1998-99 season. It also has one largest annual snowfall averages of any resort, at 666 inches! With an El Nino season this year though, it could be hard to break the average, but crazier things have happened

This question will close at the end of the 2023-24 season when the full annual totals have been reported by the mountain here: Snowfall Statistics - Mt. Baker Ski Area (mtbaker.us).

They should update this page monthly with totals as the year goes on. It will resolve to YES if the snowfall for the season is above 666 inches for the year on this day. Some delays may be made if the official yearly totals aren't up to date yet.

After looking back at the four most recent significant El Niño years and comparing them against the 30-year median snow water equivalent (SWE) on March 31 of 34.5 inches at the Wells Creek SNOTEL near Mt Baker, I've found that the median SWE on March 31 during those El Niño years is 28.2 inches or 82% compared to the 30-year normal.

Luke Stone, a forecaster at OpenSnow, has reported that snow water equivalent is usually around 82% of normal in the median El Nino year, making an above average year less than likely.
