Applied to Rob Long + Ethen Perez for their project on introspective self-reflection for AI systems. More info here https://www.constellation.org/programs/astra-fellowship
I feel like this project is the perfect blend of like... all of my current interests and past projects? I got into ML from the big data and then through philosophy through the existentialist vibes, and I've brought the two together by thinking about stuff like this mathematically (free energy principle etc).
Genuinely would be so freaking stoked to be a part of that team. Would somewhat understand if I get rejected due to age and/or lack of previous experience :(, but I feel as though my answers + resume are now at a much better point than they were last year.

@astyerche it's been fantastic reading this. Goodluck to you, hope you do well. If I wasn't busy with seri mats submissions, I'd write more rn haha. Are you applying? I didn't know CAIS restricted HS students btw, that was surprising
@firstuserhere MATS actually does not let minors apply anymore (the last cohort had a minor, and they enjoyed it, so that was quite surprising). CAIS i think its because of labor laws, and it kind of makes sense it isnt a priority of theirs to change it :<. Im trying to see if they have to potentially intern there, but I dont have a high hope for CAIS :<
@firstuserhere I emailed one of my friends who works there, and they confirmed the labor law situation.
@astyerche I hope they consider me for something (I made it clear in the email that due to high school student + potential lack of previous experience that I would be interested in whatever they knew e.g. other programs/resources). I think its mad cool :>
@astyerche I got an email for their coding interview. I'll take it sometime tonight, hopefully it'll go well?
The email also was not bcc'ed, so I saw the other applicants (about 80, although split between 3 different streams). So, that's a lot of people.
@astyerche So I took that, it was actually quite chill! Some notes:
Didn't refactor the code until the last stage, which was :P. It had been passing all the tests till then, and I didn't see too much of a need until the code was just getting unbearable. The refactored version is quite nice.
I got 570/600 on the test (not quite sure how CodeSignal works, but it's out of 600 and I only failed 3 tests). It was actually pretty fun since it reminded me of the work I used to do when I was an intern somewhere.
The last step required functionality that I implemented in a way such that I didn't have to change the previous functions that much, but they will see a cursed
-1
haunting some of the functions.Looked at some of the other applicants; I'm probably one of the youngest. That's fun.
No emails back about being a high schooler (this is probably good)
Hopefully I'll get a response back in a week. Not expecting too much, but would love if they gave some resources to look further into the topics!
@astyerche Oh, to clarify this was the pre-screening for Anthropic, which has highkey made me excited for the future when I do a job search
@astyerche Hm. After a sleep, I actually do think I have as much as a shot as the other applicants, due to my friends having participated at SERI and Atlas.
can you write code and are you ~an independent thinker and did you end up getting lucky
We will see if I end up getting lucky. I don't doubt others will full score but I feel like my application is decently strong with the 570/600.
@astyerche Just got an email back about HS status
Being a high school student does not disqualify you from being considered for the program.
So!!! That's freaking awesome, it means they'll consider my application (unlike a certain CAIS ;-; dw I love them though).
Your application will be looked at, and you'll hear about that from the "normal channels" (i.e. not this email thread). [...] In general, people in this space are quite happy to work with capable people regardless of credentials.
:D That's actually really nice to hear. I'd still say my chances are low because lots of other applicants, but its nice to hear I'll be considered on my own merits.
@astyerche Hm. They ask for references. I'm not 1000% hype for this because I don't really want to ask my previous recommenders to different programs, partially because those were all pure math, whereas this is philosophy/AI. I can void this section, but it won't look that great. Reached out to someone but its a longshot
