Car is a 2009 Toyota Corolla.

The breakdown happened when the car was running very low on fuel (maybe half a gallon left). The car was on horizontal (as opposed to on an incline) when the problems started.

The symptoms I see are:

  • Car shakes a lot while idling .

  • Check engine light is on.

  • Check engine light flashes when I try to drive it on local roads after a couple minutes

  • Engine stalls out when I try to draw too much power (eg. Trying to accelerate while going uphill, starting from a stop).

  • Engine runs less smoothly at lower rpms, more smoothly at higher rpms.

  • The car is able to drive. (I was able to get it home going 40-60 on the freeway by using a lower gear, but it took a long time to accelerate).

I've ordered an OBD scanner, and plan to pull codes from the OBD port before taking it into the mechanic. I'll post those here once I do. (This is not enough to resolve the market).

I'll resolve to the closest answer based on the intervention that fixed the car, or other if none of them are close, based on my judgement. If there were multiple problems, I'll resolve all of them to YES.

I'll resolve to N/A if I don't end up fixing the car.

I won't bet on this market.

This was a fun market for a car guy. Glad yours is fixed!

Resolving to ignition coil!

They replaced the coils, and I took the car out for a test drive. It runs well, no more misfires.

The mechanic tells me:

  • Compression test is okay (150psi on all cylinders).

  • #2 ignition coil is not working (the part was removed and tested on a ignition coil tester).

This is surprising, given the switch test from last night.

Here's what sparks 2 and 3 look like. 3 is the one still in the socket.

I switched spark plugs 2 and 3 (after switching the coils back to their original slots). The code is still P0302.

I've switched coils 2 and 3 (without switching the sparks) and run the engine to collect the next code. The code is still P0302.

I'm running some last ditch tests before a (probably expensive) mechanic appointment tomorrow. Will post those here as I do.

Almost definitely spark plug or ignition coil. Even before you posted the codes I knew it was a misfire.

I also went ahead and tested the battery with a multimeter. It reads 12.4 volts with the engine off and 14.5v with the engine on.

Got the codes:

I added a new market to predict the number of cylinders reported failing when I pull the codes: https://manifold.markets/arctangent/when-i-pull-codes-from-my-car-using-dbcfb427685a?r=YXJjdGFuZ2VudA

Amazon confirmed that they've shipped the OBD reader, so I'll probably be able to read the codes after work tomorrow night.
