Resolved
NO

James Huntsman alleges that the LDS church misused his tithings when it funded the City Creek Mall in downtown Salt Lake City.

James is the grandson of Utah business titan Jon Huntsman Sr., and the brother of US ambassador Jon Huntsman Jr.

Resolution Criteria

This market resolves YES if, by close date, a court finds in favor of James Huntsman. I will also count settlements decided in Huntsman's favor. If the plaintiffs expand (say this turns into a class action suit), a decision in favor of the plaintiffs will also resolve YES.

An out of court settlement will resolve to N/A unless the terms are known, in which case the same criteria applies. Resolves N/A if no outcome by Dec 31st 2025.

  • Update 2025-04-24 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): 9th Circuit Decision Update

    • The 9th Circuit ruled against Huntsman on January 31th.

    • Appeal Condition: If Huntsman does not appeal by end of year (EOY), the market will resolve as NO.

Huntsman's lawyer said they'd appeal the 9th Circuit's decision to SCOTUS on December 30th, 2025, but I can't find any record of that happening. It seems clear to me he hasn't won this case by the close date of this market, so I'm resolving NO.

The 9th Circuit ruled against Huntsman on January 31st. If Huntsman doesn’t appeal by EOY this will resolve NO. https://www.deseret.com/faith/2025/01/31/huntsman-tithing-lawsuit-dismissed-9th-circuit-panel/
