Lot 736 - A PAUBHA OF SHRISTHIKANTHA LOKESHVARA

On March 20th, the esteemed auction house Bonhams will auction off (former California Senator) Dianne Feinstein's collection of rare Himalayan art, with an expected total sale of ~$3 million (SF Chronicle).

This market is a duel between two impressive paintings:

Both were given the same initial estimates by Bonham: US$100,000 - US$150,000. This market resolves to the painting which the Bonhams website lists with a higher sale value at the auction.

Resolution details:

  • Here is an example from a past auction. This painting by Claude Monet "Sold for US$6,352,500 inc. premium" (this is the number I will use).

  • Edge cases:

    • If either painting is withdrawn before the auction, or I am unable to determine the sale price, it resolves N/A.

    • If one fails to sell at the auction, it resolves to the other.

    • If there's a tie (or they both fail to sell at the auction), both resolve at 50%. .

    • If any scenarios for resolution are unclear, please ask.

Lot 726 - A THANGKA OF VAJRAKILA

This painting dates back to the 13th century, depicting the goddess Vajrakilaya:

This painting blends together the artistic traditions of western Tibet and western Nepal to form a distinctly cosmopolitan milieu. Here, the Nepalese penchant for detail is evident in the flowers gently tumbling within the blue background at the painting's upper and lower registers.

Lot 736 - A PAUBHA OF SHRISTHIKANTHA LOKESHVARA

This painting is far more recent, dating back to ~1800 or so.

This Buddhist god surrounded by Hindu deities in a celestial orbit, shows a well-integrated visual synthesis between Buddhist and Hindu iconography in the Kathmandu Valley. Set within a carved torana echoing the regional wood carved designs, this painting highlights a blended religious fusion within local Kathmandu traditions.

@traders BAD NEWS (for the estate of Dianne Feinstein). Looks like this auction didn't generate as much interest as they had hoped. You can see the results here. Some stuff sold, but many didn't, presumably because the few bids they received didn't meet the required reserve price, and so the piece was pulled.

Unfortunately, that includes both pieces here—both Lots 726 & 736 didn't sell. In the description, I said "If there's a tie (or they both fail to sell at the auction), both resolve at 50%.". Thus, I plan to resolve this markat at 50% each. I'll wait a day, in case anyone thinks I'm getting this wrong, so I can correct it.

In the meantime, there are lots of other auction markets! HOKUSAI vs WARHOL is almost done, but still has time for bets, while PISARRO vs CHAGALL is just getting spicy (and check the dashboard for more)

@Ziddletwix @traders with no concerns, I'll resolve this 50%/50%. RIP to Dianne Feinstein, I wish her collection sold a bit better. (Check out more auctions in the links above).
