1,000@MachiNi LOTR: ROTK comparison. Awarded in spirit as "overall" award for the trilogy versus individual movie achievement. Should not make this a favorite in a loaded year, BUT I'd say its about as sure thing to be nominated as any other movie so something in the range of 8% seems fairly accurate to me. Roughly equal to Digger, Paper Tiger, Wild Horse 9, Fjord, and Hail Mary, but well below Odyssey.
@ShaneBo Interesting. I haven’t seen the movies so I’m not judging just curious. How would you say this trilogy stacks up against LOTR in terms of critical acclaim?
@MachiNi It's less critically acclaimed thus far, though has some advantages over the LOTR trilogy(which I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance; though I'd ignore the hobbit movies which came later). Looking back LOTR's first two movies had 19 oscar noms with 8 wins, while Dune's first two has 15 noms and 8 wins. BUT the first two LOTR films were both nominated (no wins) for best picture while only 1 of the 2 for Dune The final LOTR film earned an absurd 11 wins out of 11 nominations. including best picture, director and screenplay. LOTR also has higher metacrtic scores than DUNE so far, but Dune is trending up.
There are a significant number of critics and media that directly compare the two franchises which were each deemed "unfilmable" before their productions, and a pretty dedicated fandom that I think will keep the buzz alive.
I think if the movie has some outstanding acting performances(rare for a best picture win to not at least have a couple acting noms) recognized by the academy, and the Odyssey isn't as good as people say it will be; then there will be a media clamor for Dune 3 to get the ROTK treatment and it will be among the favorites.
