There was SUCH a consensus, that Isreal would hopelessly outclass.
Yet his opponent:
Didn't grapple at all.
Minimal kicking.
Mostly jabs and 2s.
Had to fly to Australia and didn't have home edge.
On relatively short-notice.
...And did this marching forward for 25 minutes against a star counterpuncher, and one of the greatest kickboxers ever (edit: in mma, not in pure kickboxing) Yet he took almost no visible damage, he could've done another 5 rounds.
That sounds so weird, that it suggests the fighting world should study Strickland's mma-adapted Philly shell. Commenters seem to say his style "shouldn't work", but clearly they should move on to understanding how it can be used.
@Darj Well I've seen people use that descriptor for Pereira, who Isreal managed to beat. Show me an ELO ranking or something to the contrary of Isreal being VERY high up there.
@ScroogeMcDuck Israel is one of the greatest kickboxers in MMA, not the sport of Kickboxing. Pereira was the first and only Glory double champion. And even then isn't considered top 10 by most in the Kickboxing community.
