Resolved
N/A

My laptop is doing strange battery things; when plugged in and charging, it sometimes discharges anyway. Last Saturday it discharged to 0% and shut down when plugged in. Over the weekend I was unable to use my laptop; it spontaneously started charging again today.

One place this fault could be is in the power adapter. Will getting a new one fix my laptop problem?

Resolves YES if I buy a new power adapter and the fault does not visibly reoccur to me in the subsequent two weeks, resolves NO if I buy a new power adapter and it does, resolves N/A if I do not buy a new power adapter.

IT repair guy found corrosion on the motherboard stopping it from charging. Unfortunately because this market is badly structured and I've just realised it now that mostly implies an N/A resolution.

@Tetraspace I just treated it like a low-likelihood-of-resolving market, given the high number of other things that could have been the cause on a non-cursory analysis

@Tetraspace Agreed with @PipFoweraker , no problem resolving N/A. In fact, if you've ruled out buying a power adaptor, people would probably appreciate resolving N/A now rather than waiting until market close.

My naive guess is it's more likely to be a battery or connector issue than the adapter.... Ugh, now I'm emotionally invested in your IT problems 😂

I had to replace the power jack once. Found & bought the exact part the laptop manufacturer used, unscrewed the laptop, replaced it.

It could also be the battery: Your OS should have a tool to inspect the battery, maybe see if there's any obvious problem there.

It could also be the cable: Maybe you twist the cable around a lot, and the inside is damaged in a way that it only makes contact at certain angles. So you plug it in, see that it works, and then you move it a little and it stops working without you realizing until you're out of power.

Your power adapter might have a dimmer green status light if it has trouble delivering the same voltage. If it has the same brightness as when new, that's less likely to be the problem.
