Both films open wide in US/Canada theaters on Friday, November 6, 2026: Warner Bros.' animated The Cat in the Hat, and Toho/GKIDS' Godzilla Minus Zero (the sequel to Godzilla Minus One).
Resolves YES if The Cat in the Hat's domestic (US + Canada) 3-day opening weekend gross for Fri Nov 6 – Sun Nov 8, 2026 is higher than Godzilla Minus Zero's, using the weekend ACTUALS on Box Office Mojo (boxofficemojo.com). Resolves NO if Godzilla Minus Zero's is higher.
Details:
Thursday previews count if Box Office Mojo folds them into the Friday/weekend total (it normally does).
Weekend actuals are usually posted Monday Nov 9; I will wait for actuals, not Sunday estimates. If Box Office Mojo hasn't posted by Nov 11, I'll use The Numbers (the-numbers.com) weekend chart.
If the two figures are exactly equal, resolves 50%.
If either film's wide domestic release moves off November 6, 2026, resolves N/A.
For context: Box Office Watch's November preview projects $30–40M for The Cat in the Hat and $25–35M for Godzilla Minus Zero. https://boxofficewatch.com/analysis/november-2026-preview . Godzilla Minus One opened to about $11M in the US in December 2023 before becoming a sleeper hit.
Trading closes Thursday Nov 5, before preview grosses are reported.
I opened this at 68% for The Cat in the Hat. A Dr. Seuss movie in a quiet November with no other big family film should open in the $30–40M range that Box Office Watch projects. The Grinch shows how big Seuss can get, though that one had a holiday tailwind.
Godzilla Minus Zero is the real wildcard. Minus One opened around $11M here and then grew by word of mouth, and the sequel has a wide IMAX release and a much bigger fanbase now. If presales show it tracking near $35M, I'd move toward 50/50. What would move me further: Cat in the Hat reviews landing badly, or Godzilla getting most of the premium screens that weekend.
