10th gen with eSIM support was released in 2022. Market expansion of an existing design.

predicted NO

@mas I don't think this is a YES in the market's intent.

predicted NO

@gigab0nus I tend to agree. But also oh boy, I'm glad I'm not OP. The question was intended to be easily resolvable. In almost all weeks since the introduction of the iPad except this one it was easily resolvable!

predicted YES

@gigab0nus It’s a yes by this market’s title though.

predicted NO

@MarkHamill Phew, man, I don‘t know. I think 50% is pretty accurate here, people don't know what to think.

It's technically kind of true, but the intent of a market like this is clearly to capture what most people would see as a new iPad. This isn't that. It's hard.

“A new iPad just got announced“ would usually entail that people would colloquially say “there is a new iPad now“. But normal people will not say “there is a new iPad now“ because of this update. It's the same iPad.

@JonathanMannhart I think a good comparison is when the iPhone 4 launched as a Verizon version (before then it was just AT&T) in 2011.

That also was a separate press announcement, and it was an update to the phone, and it had new hardware.

But nobody then (or now) said that Apple launched a new phone that winter, because it wasn't a new iPhone. It was the same one.

It's just a linguistic/definitional question. And colloquially, that's not what “new phone“ meant.

predicted NO

@MarkHamill By the markets title it's a NO. Apple speaks of "更新版的" (updated version) and macrumors calls it "updated iPad". There is nothing one would call "new".

predicted YES

@gigab0nus An iPad that previously was not available is now available. That's "new." What the company says is irrelevant to the fact that something they sell that wasn't there before is now there. I'm typically opposed to resolving based on the 'spirit' and 'colloquial' meanings of a market, but I come from a site where rules cuck markets like this happened regularly and were very unforgiving.

predicted NO

@MarkHamill luckily @treasurement figured out that this version was already available everywhere except for China, so we do not need to have this discussion

@JonathanMannhart Yeah, really black swan event there. I’ll survive though lol

@MarkHamill ...you're not ACTUALLY the real Mark Hamill, right?

predicted YES

@StefGeiger Of course I am. Why else would I link to my imdb and twitter?

@MarkHamill Because so would anyone else trying to impersonate a famous person.

Prove it by force projecting your likeness somewhere in my home. If you’re the real Mark Hamill you’ll know where I live.
