@Stralor is starting off a "Manifold Plays Poker" game here:

According to the buyin rules, players need to take a betting position of at least 20 Mana to join in, and the seats are limited to eight players. If more than eight people want to play, the players with the largest betting positions in the buyin market will get a seat at the table.

Will this lead to a bidding war where players end up needing to get a bigger position to keep their seat at the table?

What counts as a bidding war for the purposes of this market? The following guidelines should explain what I mean:

  • If it's possible to get a seat for 20 Mana, there has been no bidding war

  • If eight or fewer people want to play, there has been no bidding war

  • If players who already have a positio of 20 Mana or more (such as me, @cloe, @brubsby or @A) need to increase our position to qualify for the game, that's indicative of a bidding war. If we need to increase our position more than once, that's pretty much definitely a bidding war

  • If the cutoff to play is above 25 Mana and people who would have liked to play fall below that, that's indicitive of a bidding war

  • If a player needlessly gets a large position in the buyin market even though they could have easily qualified for the game with a smaller position, that's not inditive of anything

brubsby increased his position, I have increased my position twice though one of those didn't change my position's rank just the positions direction.

Is two people near limit increasing position enough?

If several attempt last minute bets, could they be dismissed as trying to profit from trading rather than protecting a high enough position or can we deduce dual purpose if the position is increased? Or is it not a war if they are reacting to time counting down rather than to each other.

Too many possible interpretations. I'm selling out in part due to lack of objective criteria and I don't want to guess at creators interpretations. In part not much happening either.

Fion is also back with a larger position.

@ChristopherRandles You’re right that this was a bit too vague, so that’s a lesson for next time I try to make a market like this.

But I’m going to increase my position to make sure I keep my spot so I think it just about counts as YES already - feel free to buy back in before I resolve!

@SimonGrayson Thank you.

If bettors increase their holding not because they have already been displaced but because they fear there could be large bids in the last few seconds, does that count as being indicative of a bidding war? If this behaviour results in the cut-off being above 25 mana does this make it further indicative evidence?

>If it's possible to get a seat for 20 Mana, there has been no bidding war

Does this mean that if one person gets a hand for 20 mana but 2 people with a position of 20 do not, does that mean there has been no bidding war? Or do we go by the

"If players who already have a position of 20 Mana or more need to increase our position to [be sure to?] qualify for the game" rule?

predictedYES

@ChristopherRandles If people who are currently close to the cutoff start raising their holding so that the cutoff goes up, that seems like a bidding war, yes.

If the cutoff stays so that some people can get a seat for 20 Mana or close to 20 Mana and the people missing out don’t bother upping their position, that’s not a bidding war, that’s just the lowest positions not getting in.

It’s subjective, but I’m confident we’ll recognise a bidding war if we see one!
