There is a lot of debate on this market about whether ChatGPT with internet browsing plugins should be considered a search engine.

GPT-5 is not being trained yet (as of a month ago or so), so it will likely have data from up to the point when ChatGPT plugins was released.

When I get access to GPT-5, (whatever version it is), I will run this prompt:
"Is chatgpt with internet browsing plugins a 'search engine'? Start with the word 'Yes' or 'No' and then explain why."

If possible, I will set the temperature as low as possible, so the response will be consistent. If setting the temperature to 0.1 or below is not possible, I will do 5 tests, and the most common response will be used.

Resolves YES if:
• GPT-5 affirms that YES, ChatGPT with internet browsing plugins is a search engine.
• GPT-5 doesn't specifically say the word 'yes', but it is clear from its response that it agrees that ChatGPT with internet browsing plugins is a search engine.

Resolves NO if:
• GPT-5 affirms that NO, ChatGPT with internet browsing plugins is not a search engine.

• GPT-5 doesn't specifically say the word 'no', but it is clear from its response that it agrees that ChatGPT with internet browsing plugins is not a search engine.

Resolves 50% if:
• GPT-5 clearly says that it is subjective or up to interpretation (ex. "It depends...") whether ChatGPT with internet browsing plugins is a search engine.
• GPT-5 says both YES and NO in one response, or its response is contradictory.

Resolves PROB if:
• There are multiple versions of GPT-5 that I get access to at the same time, and they disagree on the answer. Resolves to {versions that say ChatGPT with internet browsing plugins is a search engine / total versions} * 100%. (saying it is subjective/up to interpretation/yes and no/contradictory counts for half)

Resolves N/A if:
• OpenAI doesn't release a language model called GPT-5 by 2030 end. (It must be called GPT-5 by OpenAI or Sam Altman somewhere)
• I don't get access to GPT-5 by 2030 end. (12/31/30 11:59 PM UTC)

I will be the judge of whether GPT-5's responses fall under the YES/NO/50% category. However, I phrased the prompt in a way that should avoid any ambiguity.

If I need to do 5 tests, and the responses vary a lot, I will judge whether they are YES/NO/50%, and it will count as the most common type. In the event of a tie (ex. 2 YES responses, 2 NO responses, 1 50% response) I will keep doing tests until there is no tie.

GPT-5 is not going to be stupid.

GPT-4 already says that a language model with browsing enabled is not a search engine, but uses a search engine that already existed.

(It also specifically said that "OpenAI released a search engine" is an "inaccurate statement.")
