Background
Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency, without a central bank or single administrator, that can be sent from user to user on the peer-to-peer bitcoin network without the need for intermediaries. It was created in 2009 by an anonymous entity known as Satoshi Nakamoto. The value of Bitcoin is known for experiencing notable short-term fluctuations due to factors such as market liquidity and speculative trading. Price tracking sites like CoinMarketCap aggregate data from numerous cryptocurrency exchanges to provide a volume-weighted average price, aiming for accuracy and neutrality.
Considerations
Cryptocurrency markets operate 24/7, meaning prices can fluctuate constantly. While CoinMarketCap aggregates data to provide a generally accepted market price, minor variations may exist across different exchanges at any given moment. The resolution time of 5:00 PM EST is chosen for a specific snapshot, but traders should be aware of continuous price movements.
