Will I successfully defeat my Twitter "addiction" by putting "check Twitter" at a very low priority on my to-do list?

NO

This is such a simple solution I'm amazed I haven't thought of it before.

For context, I spend way too much time on Twitter every day and have done for weeks.

I would allow myself to check Twitter during a small window of time every day if I didn't get to it on my to-do list - which if you've seen the size of my to-do list, you'd know is never going to happen - and at no other time. (I might also use this rule for other things on my todo list that I am excited about doing.) I don't want to stop using Twitter completely, because it's a useful source of news and fun memes.

The reason I think this system will work is because it avoids falling into the following pattern of thought:

  • Superego: "You MUST refrain from the sinful activity of checking Twitter and replying on Twitter! If you don't you're BAD!"

  • Ego: "Bah! I don't want to refrain! I haven't got enough ADHD spoons to refrain, I need my Twitter fix because it's generally a reliable source of dopamine, at least for the first few hours of use, and I'm not getting enough dopamine from what I'm doing at the moment! Plus, this rule is an outrageous OTT obstruction on my freedom, so I'm going to rebel against it and take a break from work and check Twitter anyway!"

and hopefully replaces it with the following pattern of thought:

  • Superego: [solemnly, with straight face] "Yes, you totally can check Twitter whenever you like. There's just one small condition! Unless you do it within the Twitter-checking-window time, you have to do it in order, AFTER all the 999 things on your todo list."

  • Ego: "Well that sounds reasonable, but that's not happening realistically, so I'd better forget about doing that outside of my daily Twitter-checking window. But OK, so you're saying there's no such constraints on anything else on my todo list? OK so let's look from top to bottom for something FUN to do or something that gives me DOPAMINE, that isn't Twitter. Or let's even think of something NEW to do and ADD it to my to-do list at the TOP! I'm allowed to do that too, yippee!!"

This market resolves YES if this system works more than 75% of the days during the next month. It resolves NO if it works less than 75% of the days.

I completely forgot about this, so it didn't work.

You know, technically Mastodon isn't Twitter...
