I find it self-indulgent for mankind to predict that reality is analogous to a computer program, something mankind themselves invented in the first place... At best, it's a reasonable metaphor, given our lack of knowledge of the "great beyond". But we could just as well compare our current reality to a koi pond, or to the premise of Toy Story. It's just that our computer-specific language itself was developed using a lot of metaphor, and that has ended up being confusing when it's been taken beyond the original intent.

@TylerColeman Interesting point of view. My impression is that not being in base reality would be yet another insult to human vanity, making us reluctant to take the idea seriously.
