TL;DR: When will the code editor Zed have ≥10% usage according to a Stack Overflow Developer Survey?

Background

Zed is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that is currently in development. One way to measure the popularity of different IDEs is through the annual Stack Overflow Developer Survey, which in 2023 contained the question

Which development environments did you use regularly over the past year, and which do you want to work with over the next year? Please check all that apply.

When will ≥10% of "All Respondents" answer Zed to that question?

Resolution

This question resolves YES to the first year that the developer survey has a question about IDE use (similar to the one in 2023) and where ≥10% of "All Respondents" answered ZED to that question.

Otherwise, "Not before 2029" resolves YES.

Seeing how old/abandoned Atom is at 5% this does give me hope since the Zed team is mostly Atom people and maybe those people will switch.

And the sentiment of people I talk to is that no one loves VS code, they begrudgingly use it because of plugins. So if they can get important plugins supported it probably wouldn’t take much to get people to switch.

Plus the emphasis on shared editing gives Zed an extra viral angle to its adoption that other editors don’t have.

@Nikos And maybe another point for Zed: right now when I think collaboration I think human <-> human. But human <-> AI seems like the direction we’re heading. And having an editor built with that collaboration in mind would probably be much better than trying to jam it into an existing editor.
