Will Trump suggest that maybe someone should try to assassinate an opponent of his before Election Day?

Resolved
NO

Examples of things that would resolve Yes:

“Many people are saying maybe Obama deserves a moment like that, but I disavow!”

“Imagine sleepy Joe in my position, bleeding from the head, but he wouldn’t be able to stand back up, he’s too low energy.”

Example of things that would be insufficient:

“No one should ever do something so crazy, so nasty, as try to kill a politician, not even Joe Biden, much as I do not like him.”

“Obama had some assassination attempts too, but we want trials for these people, we want law and order, not violence!”

He got close with the recent Liz Cheney comments and they might count.

@LiamZ Yeah, if he had said that about Harris it would have resolved this Yes. Edit: probably not actually, this was before I read the comment in context. See below discussion for a snapshot.

@Panfilo You don’t think Cheney (who is campaigning with Harris) is a political opponent? You included Obama in the description so that actually makes it seem like YES if it really would be an easy YES if it were Harris.

sold Ṁ286 NO

@LiamZ I don't mean to be pedantic, but I think the combination of context and level of opponent is what makes me think it falls short, but I have sold my small position in case a debate develops.

@Panfilo Trump was making a rhetorical point to the effect that Liz, while willing to send other people into war, would -- in Trump's view -- not be brave enough to go herself.

@Panfilo I’ve also got no stake now. I would argue if Obama would count it means it's not just the person running against him and Liz Cheney is part of his political opposition. If it would be YES for Harris, it feels odd to not count it since there wasn’t a clause about being an equally prominent member of the opposition as Obama.

I leave the discussion of whether the implication was strong enough to others. He was suggesting a firing squad which raises the chance his supporters shoot her but is different than suggesting a situation like Butler.

@LiamZ No, he was suggesting Liz enter into a combat zone and be faced by an enemy military pointing guns at her. Putting Liz into a hypothetical situation where she may die in combat is not calling for her assassination.

@AlQuinn Eh the specificity of 9 barrels pointing at her sounds like a firing squad rather than a skirmish. It didn't include her shooting back at all.

I agree on the context of it being about sending people to war obviously but this looks like spin. I have no stake though.

@LiamZ I sincerely don't think Trump knows that number is significant in some firing squad norms.

@Panfilo Who knows what is rattling around in his head. I’m pretty sure we have 4 years coming of arguing over the minutia of his constant rhetorical vomit.

@LiamZ If only the media would try to apply the slightest bit of charity in understanding what Trump likely meant rather than purposefully twisting and misconstruing his every utterance to cast him as a Nazi, you would have more peace over the next 4 years.

@AlQuinn I think him swearing or rambling is fairly benign, and him vowing to mass deport an 8 figure number of people is sufficient for criticizing him as a fascist.

@Panfilo I don't think that removing people who are present in the US illegally is anything like fascism, but if it is, then 40% of the US are fascists (and maybe "garbage" as Biden might say 😉 )

A retraction, of sorts, on Liz:

@AlQuinn I didn't read CNN, I listened to his words and came to that conclusion from what he said. I read it first in a right leaning article (I use a news aggregator) and don’t care about this reporter. I also think the way you are playing the “garbage” thing is a good example of the sort of mediocre spin we’re in for more generally assuming he wins. You most likely know what that was in response to but fall into the typical behavior patterns of his supporters which renders the conversation uninteresting.

@LiamZ Sorry if the irony tags on my "garbage" comment didn't come across (the wink emoji). I don't care if Biden calls people garbage, or Hilary calls them Deplorables, or Trump, through the official channel of a hired commedian, calls PR a trash island. None of this matters, except to a click-based Malthusian attention-economy-driven media. It's the systematic & institutional misconstrual of and lies about Trump that annoy me. It's probably the case that prior lies have become so ingrained in the TDS sufferers of the world that they don't even try to fairly parse Trump's words anymore (if they ever did), as in this instance where his meaning is perfectly clear.

I'm not even a Trump supporter, didn't vote for him, and don't plan on voting for him, but after 2016, I actually bothered to attempt to understand Trumpism, and now that I do, I cured my TDS and can actually appreciate his talent and understand what his supporters see in him. Yet, when these lies and distortions around him are signal-boosted by a 80%(?) left-leaning media, it does make me want to vote for him in the same way Just Stop Oil people dumping soup on works of art makes me want to roll coal; i.e., the Trump supporting reactionaries are reacting to real and substantial problems with sense-making in the media.

@AlQuinn Do you think Elon Musk should be denaturalized and deported for commiting the same kind of illegal immigration fraud as some of those people?

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/washington-post-reports-elon-musk-briefly-worked-illegally-us-1990s-2024-10-26/

@Panfilo Clearly, the smart thing to do is to not deport Musk.

@LiamZ IMO this is clearly as much a suggestion as "“Imagine sleepy Joe in my position, bleeding from the head, but he wouldn’t be able to stand back up, he’s too low energy.” which you said would resolve yes, and Liz Cheney is as much a political opponent in the current environment as Obama, for whom you suggested a threat would resolve Yes. Whether or not this meets some higher standard for a threat is a separate question from whether it meets the standard you previously said you'd adhere to, which I think it very much does.

whoops meant to ping @Panfilo , not Liam

bought Ṁ100 YES

“Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? Let’s see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained to her face," is the relevant quote I think counts given the standards set by what you've said previously.

@Fay42 Except (once again) Trump's comment has nothing to do with assassination

Just going to beat this (hopefully) dead horse (no! I'm not suggesting cruelty towards animals, people!):

This seems really broad relative to the title which is why I can't bet:

"Examples of things that would resolve Yes:

“Many people are saying maybe Obama deserves a moment like that, but I disavow!”

“Imagine sleepy Joe in my position, bleeding from the head, but he wouldn’t be able to stand back up, he’s too low energy.”"

Yeah the examples seem silly

bought Ṁ50 NO

@PhilosophyBear Yeah this is very ambiguous -- it's a reach to the same the latter that he wouldnt stand back up suggests someone should assassinate him like what??
