This market resolves YES if an animal within the United States is recognized as having personhood rights before 2030. The animal at the center of the case must reside in the United States, and the case must be decided in the US State or Federal courts.

This market resolves NO if a district court rules that an animal is a person before 2030, but an appeals court rules that it is not a person after 2030, and the Supreme Court then agrees with the appeals court or declines to rule on its decision. However, this market resolves YES if a district court rules that an animal is a person before 2030, and an appeals court and the Supreme Court agree or decline to rule on the decision.

As a result, this market may not close until well after 2030. However, if no court has recognized an animal as a person before 2030, then this will resolve no in 2030.

In 2021, a US District Court recognized hippos (AP, Court Brief) in Colombia as "interested persons." As the hippos reside outside of the United States, this ruling is insufficient to resolve the market to YES.

A number of other cases are being advanced by the Nonhuman Rights Project, where the next case to proceed will likely involve three elephants in the Fresno Zoo. Previous cases involving chimpanzees and elephants have thus far been unsuccessful in other states.
