Imagine that perfect brain scanning and emulation are available, such that we can create a "perfect" copy of any human mind (perfect in the sense that it results in the same outputs that the original mind would have, given the same inputs).

Your spouse has died from a terminal illness. Before passing away, they consented to having their brain scanned, on the off chance that you might want to emulate them someday, and they consented to your so doing.

Suppose that we can somehow determine whether the entities resulting from this brain emulation are conscious or not (at least insofar as we can be confident that other humans are conscious).
