Update: Lost 19 Pounds

Have gained around 20 lbs over the past six months, mostly due to work stress eating. Am going on a new diet, plan on getting a personal trainer, taking Adderall again, beeminders - the works. I will weigh myself on September 1st and if I am not ~20 lbs lighter than I am now (215) I will resolve this market no. I plan to heavily bet YES at slightly above my personal opinion of success.

196 pounds on the dot. Missed it by a fucking hair

@DeanValentine Ugh. I’m sorry to have won mana off your suffering, but not so sorry that I’ll stop.

So I didn't do anything I said I would in the description, and was like 210ish at the start of the month, but I did start water fasting on and off over the last few weeks. I didn't think I was going to make it, but I'm already 198 pounds so I might just slip under the 195 mark in the next few days. WML

My apologies for betting against you; think of it as me subsidizing your success. I’m going to point out that as written, this only resolves YES if you’re ~20lbs under your current weight. If you lose ~30lbs, this should resolve NO as currently written despite that being more weight loss than you’d hoped for.

Nah, if you’re 30 lbs lighter you’re also 20 lbs lighter, 10 lbs lighter, etc. Your interpretation doesn’t match the spirit, and I don’t think it matches the letter either.

predicted YES

@JohnSmithb9be then I lost 20+10 lbs

predicted NO

@DeanValentine “I used to weigh 210lbs and now I weigh 160lbs. I lost 20lbs.” I do agree it doesn’t match the spirit of the market, though.

If you were making your bet based on this interpretation, you should probably have clarified first and bet second

predicted NO

@JimHays No, I wasn’t. I believe that markets should be as specific as possible to avoid drama, though, and pointing out inconsistencies helps with that goal.

predicted NO

That’s fair, though maybe you could have instead asked if Dean meant to include “at least” in the description
