Resolution Criteria
The market resolves YES if the DMK wins the most seats in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election scheduled for April 23, 2026, with vote counting on May 4, 2026. The DMK must secure more seats than any other single party or alliance to resolve YES. Results will be verified through the Election Commission of India's official announcement.
Background
In the 2021 election, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance won 159 of 234 seats, with the DMK alone winning 133 seats. The DMK's alliance partners—Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi—won all 39 seats in the state in the 2024 general election and remain with the alliance. The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam joined the DMK-led alliance in February 2026.
The main opposition comes from the AIADMK-led front, which reunited with the BJP in April 2025, with the PMK joining in January 2026 and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam joining in January 2026. Actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) launched its campaign in September 2025.
Considerations
The DMK claims to have fulfilled 364 of 505 poll promises from 2021, though opposition parties dispute this, with key unfulfilled promises including scrapping NEET, restoring the Old Pension Scheme, and filling two lakh government vacancies. The AIADMK has accused the ruling party of driving the state into a debt trap, with debt nearly doubling from Rs 4.85 lakh crore in 2021 to over Rs 10 lakh crore in 2026. Historically, no DMK-led government in Tamil Nadu has retained power after the 1971 election, with all subsequent DMK administrations succeeded by AIADMK-led coalitions.
