Pinehurst was played as a par 70, not 72. Most Opens are played to less than 72 because of the length of drives of top professionals For member play and some amateur events, it is played as a par 72 with the 8th and 16th holes played as par 5, not as long par 4 holes as as the case in the open. I'm definitely not a golf expert, but from that page it looks like par is 72 * 4 rounds = 288, and 74 players got less than 288. If it's just about the R4 count, 30 players got less than 72. Would you mind explaining this?
