Background

The Gambia national football team, nicknamed "The Scorpions," has never qualified for a FIFA World Cup tournament. However, the nation has shown competitive improvement in recent years, qualifying for its first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2021 (reaching the quarter-finals) and returning in 2023. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Gambia finished third in Group F with 13 points (4 wins, 1 draw, 5 losses), behind Ivory Coast and Gabon.

The 24th FIFA World Cup in 2030 will feature 48 teams and will be co-hosted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, with celebratory centenary matches held in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. Qualifying matches for the African confederation (CAF) are scheduled to begin in 2027.
