Resolution criteria
Resolves YES if Takaichi Sanae, while serving as Prime Minister of Japan, makes an in-person visit to Yasukuni Shrine (Chiyoda, Tokyo) on any date during her premiership. Verification may come from the Prime Minister’s Office (Kantei) site/schedule or clear reports by at least two major outlets (e.g., NHK, Kyodo, Reuters, Asahi, Yomiuri, Japan Times). (japan.kantei.go.jp)
Sending a ritual offering (tamagushi/masakaki), a proxy visit by an aide, or visits immediately before/after her term do NOT count.
A “private capacity” visit counts only if later confirmed by Kantei or two major outlets with on-the-record reporting or photos. (japan.kantei.go.jp)
Resolves NO if she leaves office without such a visit. Resolves N/A only if she never becomes Prime Minister.
Background
As of October 5, 2025, Takaichi has been elected LDP president and is poised to become Japan’s first female PM pending Diet confirmation in mid-October. (reuters.com)
She is a regular Yasukuni visitor; as Economic Security Minister she visited on August 15, 2024 (WWII surrender anniversary). (reuters.com)
Sitting PM visits are rare: the last was Abe Shinzo on December 26, 2013; many PMs instead send offerings. (cnbc.com)
Considerations
Such visits reliably trigger criticism from China and South Korea, creating diplomatic costs that often deter sitting PMs. (jp.reuters.com)
If she opts only to send ritual offerings during spring/autumn festivals or on August 15, this market resolves NO under the criteria above.
