Last Tuesday we found two large caterpillars in our kale plants. We kept them in a glass jar with a breathable lid. Our 1 year old got a few chances to play with them, and may have unintentionally injured them while picking them up.

The larger of the two appears to have died a caterpillar.

The smaller one appears to have successfully formed a chrysalis several days ago. Will that chrysalis succeed in becoming a butterfly?

The chrysalis has been transferred to a larger container to give more space to the butterfly should it emerge.

While being transferred, the chrysalis twitched (which is a defensive mechanism) suggesting it is still alive and well.
