As of early 2026, it is highly unlikely that former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski will return to North Macedonia to hold a government position. He remains in Hungary, having been granted asylum in 2018 to avoid serving a prison sentence for abuse of power, making his return legally, and politically, fraught despite the return of his party, VMRO-DPMNE, to power in 2024
