Resolution Criteria
This market resolves YES if Brandon Johnson is officially recalled from his position as Mayor of Chicago before the end of his current term. It resolves NO if he completes his term without being recalled or leaves office for any other reason (resignation, death, etc.).
Background
Brandon Johnson was elected as Mayor of Chicago in April 2023 and took office in May 2023.
Currently, Illinois law does not have a provision for recalling the mayor of Chicago.
House Bill 1084, introduced by state Representatives La Shawn Ford and Anthony De Luca, aims to create a process for recalling the Chicago mayor. The bill outlines a procedure involving affidavits, petitions, and special elections.
A separate grassroots effort led by Daniel Boland is working to gather signatures to place a recall measure on the ballot. This would require collecting over 56,000 signatures by August 5, 2025, for the measure to appear on the November ballot.
Mayor Johnson has criticized these recall efforts, calling them "disingenuous" and suggesting they are driven by political opponents.
Considerations
Even if recall legislation passes, the actual recall process would still require gathering signatures and winning a recall election.
