On May 29, 2026, the world's first fully farm-raised eel (kabayaki) went on sale to the general public in Japan (via AEON's Green Beans / AEON Shop, produced by Yamada Suisan). The price: ¥4,860–¥12,960 per fillet. Still a luxury item.

Unlike normal farming, which depends on catching wild glass eels (シラスウナギ), "fully farm-raised" eel is hatched from artificially spawned eggs — the long-sought key to a stable, sustainable supply. But the real goal is making it affordable. So how low can the price go?

Will fully farm-raised eel kabayaki be sold to the general public in Japan for under ¥3,000 per fillet before the end of 2027?

Resolves YES if / YESの条件: fully farm-raised eel kabayaki (from artificially hatched glass eels) becomes purchasable by the general public for under ¥3,000 per standard fillet (tax included). Pre-orders, limited quantities, online/EC sales, and limited-time discounts all count.

Resolves NO if / NOの条件: this is not achieved by the end of 2027. 2027年末までに達成されない場合。

Notes / 補足: "Per fillet" = roughly one standard kabayaki fillet (~150–200g edible portion). Other formats (half-fillet, chopped, etc.) will be converted to a per-fillet basis by weight. Wild-caught and conventionally farmed eel do not count — the product must be fully farm-raised.

Eel obviously can be efficiently farmed and competitively priced right away if desired, even if new technology needed developing, or animal studies needed doing, they could just do that, especially in Japan. The question is that what they desire.
