Texas Supreme Court temporarily blocks woman from emergency abortion

Dec 9 (reuters) - The Texas Supreme Court temporarily blocked a pregnant woman from obtaining an emergency abortion on Friday, shortly after the state's attorney general requested the block.

The legal battle is a major test case since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the nationwide constitutional right to abortion last year, enabling states like Texas to pass near complete bans.

The woman, Kate Cox, 31, of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, sought court authorization for the abortion because her fetus was diagnosed on Nov. 27 with trisomy 18, a genetic abnormality that usually results in miscarriage, stillbirth or death soon after birth.

Cox, who is about 20 weeks pregnant, said in her lawsuit that she would need to undergo her third caesarean section if she continues the pregnancy. That could jeopardize her ability to have more children, which she said she and her husband want.

You should either resolve NA or No, doubtful she’s going to release details on something that could be considered a crime.

She has now reportedly fled the state to get an abortion in another state. How does this resolve if she gets an abortion elsewhere despite Texas disallowing it?

predictedNO

@MitchLindgren I will resolve NO if they do not grant her permission within Texas

predictedNO

@MitchLindgren Theoretically she could still gain permission by later proving threat to her life/health. If that happens, it will resolve YES

If she is confirmed to get an out of state abortion before any permissions are granted, I will resolve NO.

@Gen If she gets an abortion anywhere shouldn’t this resolve yes?

resolves YES if we find out she had an abortion

resolves NO otherwise

@TBonez Sorry I’ll correct that. Should say have an abortion in Texas … I can refund any bad bets on that info

predictedYES

@Gen That’s alright thanks for clarifying

It’s such hypocrisy if they don’t… insane set of morals for a court to have to force someone to have a dead baby and likely becoming infertile after. Someone that is by all means pro life and loves and wants children. I hope people realize that strict abortion laws hurt all families, and this should not be a legal issue at all but a medical one. Why the government wants it so bad to be in control of women’s bodies?
